The Lipton company was founded in 1870 by Sir Thomas Johnson Lipton. Lipton was born on May 10, 1850 in Glasgow, Scotland to Irish parents. Lipton immigrated to the United States in 1865, when he was 15 to escape a difficult economy, arr Belstaff iving in New York with $8 in his wallet. With the Civil War just ending and many veterans vying for few jobs, Lipton spent five years chasing jobs around the country, before returning to Glasgow, and working at his fathers store. Frustrated by the contrast between the modern and flashy marketing practices he witnessed in the US and the stodgy practices of his father, Lipton used his savings to open his own small provisions shop in 1871.
Through a combination of talent, determination, and hard work, Lipton went from that one small shop to 20 successful shops within ten years. Among many outrageous marketing ideas, Lipton brought in a mammoth cheese wheel into his store in 1881, and just before Christmas, inserted a gold piece into the cheese. By Christmas Eve every ounce of the giant cheese had sold. In the coming decade Liptons empire continued to grow, reaching an Belstaff d exceeding 200 stores. At this point Lipton started spending more time and efforts on finding new items to sell in his chain, identifying tea as an opportunity, he bought five plantations to cut out the middleman and be able to sell tea at substantially less than the market price at the time. Lipton moved to the United States at age 15, and was inspired by the power of advertising using outrageous actions, stunts, and slogans. After returning to Scotland, Lipton opened his first grocery store in 1871 and used American style publicity. By 1880 his one store had grown to twenty, and by 1890 to over three hundred. Lipton started his tea empire in 1890 on a stop in Ceylon (Sri Lanka today) on his way to Australia. Lipton bought five bankrupt coffee plantations and started them growing tea for his grocery stores. He then marketed the tea using the slogan Direct from the Tea Gardens to the Teapot. Lipton was the first to sell tea in individual packe Belstaff ts rather than simply loose leaf.
